Dec. 1919. At the height of the 1st Red Scare, 249 Russian-born anarchists are deported to the USSR aboard the USAT Buford, dubbed the “Soviet Ark” by a laudatory press. 5 years later, the same ship is set adrift as the decor of The Navigator, Buster Keaton’s 1924 slapstick feature. Through archives and 16mm lab work, a comedian becomes the unwitting historian of a deportation. Navigators recasts his filmic testimony to map out the Soviet Ark’s journey across the Atlantic.
